Khon Kaen Province and Khon Kaen University join public and private organizations to organize Khon Kaen International Marathon 2019 that welcomes the world runners under world standards
Friday August 3, 2018, 1.30-3.30 p.m. at Sirikunakorn Building, KKU – Khon Kaen Province and Khon Kaen University Mr. Somsak Jangtrakoon, Khon Kaen Governor, Assoc. Prof. Piansak Phakdee, Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relation, and Mr. Santi Laoboonsngiam, Khon Kaen Vice Governor and Chairman of the Marathon Route Committee had a press release of Khon Kaen International Marathon 2019, with over 100 Marathon committee members, heads of public organizations, runners and mass media.
“Khon Kaen International Marathon” aims at publicizing knowledge and understanding of health sciences and health-promoting sports for good health, at making the youths become interested in and see the importance of exercise, exercise as a habit, become aware of danger from drugs, and cooperate in campaigning against drugs of all types, at developing competition management technology, and at developing Thai athletes toward international standards as well as promoting Thai runners toward international and professional marathoners and for Khon Kaen to become Asean Marathon Majors of the ASEAN region.
Mr. Somsak Jangtrakoon, Khon Kaen Governor said that the grandeur of Khon Kaen International Marathon is known in various countries. All remember well that the last week of January every year they and a lot of runners from many countries will join this event. This results from cooperation of all sectors concerned who put their fullest efforts to organizing Khon Kaen International Marathon until the event becomes the tradition every year.
Khon Kaen people are alert and keen to participate in management of the event. The working groups do their work on a voluntary basis. In addition, folks apply as a runner and as a cheering team along the route. Communities come out and welcome the runners with the identity of Isan cultures. Students help by giving labor and everyone impresses the runners.
“To promote the spirit of Thai runners, the first male and female Thai runners reaching the finish line will be supported by Khon Kaen Province to join Tokyo International Marathon at an amount of 50,000 Baht each. This is in order to have Khon Kaen Marathon as the base that drives everyone’s dream towards the target while the province is trying to push Thai runners to the world’s front line.”
Mr. Santi Laoboonsngiam, Khon Kaen Vice Governor and Chairman of the Marathon Route Committee said that the route is changed a little from Kaennakorn lake to Srinuan Temple because there are vehicles obstructing runners at this part which may cause accidents. However, the length is still the same. This time, the survey has been done more elaborately to find route defects, lighting is added, rough parts and waterlogged parts are avoided. The readiness of the route is the major part of management and all groups concerned are expediting adjustments. For safety of this grand event, the governing sector, police, soldiers and safety officers are called from all organizations in sub-districts and districts to safeguard runners at all points along the route. Some roads will be closed for an efficient system. Moreover, all runners will be insured against accidents. This marathon is truly “The Marathon City”.
Assoc. Prof. Piansak Phakdee, Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relation said that Khon Kaen International Marathon is a world standard running route certified by AIMS. Because of this, runners can show the Certificate received to apply for the Marathon everywhere.
Khon Kaen International Marathon uses the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to monitor the runners along the route using RFID under the UHF frequency. Each runner will receive a water-proof tag attached to the shoe and the info reading is efficient and precise.
Khon Kaen University has developed a software dubbed KKU Time Tracking for over 9 years for the 2019 Khon Kaen International Marathon. The software will take care of registration and show the results quickly and precisely. It is therefore certain that management and administration of Khon Kaen International Marathon will not cause errors.
Khon Kaen University has also organized “Dream toward Khon Kaen International Marathon” for over 10 years by coordinating with 48 schools in Khon Kaen and in the Northeast. The schools have been informed of the Marathon event and students are supported to join the Marathon. Until now there have been 5000 students under this project. The objective is to create inspiration among the youths who are valuable resources of the country and make them see that “the dream can be made true”.
As far as nursing and medical care is concerned, Khon Kaen Public Health Office will set up a central nursing center with 19 nursing care units along the route. There will be 5 advanced ambulances running with the runners along the route of all 4 types of runs. There will be all together 400 officers including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and life savers. An efficient transfer system will be provided that links with efficient hospitals including Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen Center Hospital (with Excellence Center and Pre-hospital Care (EMS) facilities guaranteed by national awards), and Queen Sirikit Heart Center.
For catering, freshly cooked foods and dishes will be served to all runners. A screening system guarantees that all runners until the last one will be served.
This year applicants will receive specially designed souvenirs that include a T-shirt, medal, and other souvenirs designed by Khon Kaen University lecturers who designed them with Khon Kaen identities such as Phu Wiang dinosaur, Kham Kaen Relic Pakoda, Khon Kaen Gate, etc. In addition, the cultural capital is used by introducing line patterns, Isan legend “Sang Sinchai” hero and heroine with the scenes from 200-year ancient murals on Isan ‘sim’ or locally named “hoop taen” at Chaisri Temple and Sanuanwareepatanaram Temple in Khon Kaen. The design therefore relate the legend in a contemporary style. The runners will be able to experience the art and culture of Isan.
Khon Kaen International Marathon 2019 will be on Sunday January 27, 2019. There are 4 running types: the 42.195 km Marathon, the 21.10 km Half Marathon, the 11.55 km Mini-Marathon and the 4.5 km fun run or run for health. The first male and female reaching the finish line of the Marathon category will receive a trophy from His Majesty King Rama 10. The first female and male reaching the finish line of the Half Marathon category will receive a trophy from Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, and the first female and male reaching the finish line of the Mini-Marathon category will receive a trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Cash awards are also included. There is a special condition for the elderly to promote their health by running, so those aged 60-69 years will pay half the price and those over 70 years are waived the registration fee.

Those who want to apply in person can do so at Sports Division of Khon Kaen University, Physical Education Building opposite KKU Swimming Pool from 09.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. (every day). For early birds, a good bargain will be offered. For application in August: Marathon = 800 Baht, Half Marathon = 600 Baht, Mini-Marathon = 450 Baht. Students at all levels and institutions can apply on November 19-30, 2018 at 150 Baht for all categories.
