Over 40,000 runners joined Khon Kaen International Marathon 2018 – Ethiopians won and Thai man and woman won 40,000 THB to Tokyo Marathon
Khon Kaen Province and Khon Kaen University joined public and private organizations to hold the Khon Kaen International Marathon 2018 and to upgrade it to the World Marathon Majors on January 28, 2018. The exciting event for all runners started at 4.00 a.m. with 36,993 runners. 1,977 were in the Full-Marathon category, 2,925 in the Half-Marathon category, 7,091 in the Mini-Marathon and 25,000 chose to join the fun-run category. This number included 44 nationalities from 33 countries all over the world. The winner of Male Full-Marathon was an Ethiopian Teshome Getachew Besha, who received a trophy from His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn Bodindradhebayavarangkoon was also an Ethiopian Bize Beyira Negasa who did 02:20:28 hours and was awarded a trophy from His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn Bodindradhebayavarangkoon and a prize of 50,000 THB.
The special prize only for Thai people this year was given to Khun Tanatip Deechim and Khun Punyanut Prachayanipon who reached the finish line first in the Marathon category. The prize of 40,000 THB each was given by the Governor for the application and plane ticket to Tokyo Marathon.
Mr. Somsak Jungtrakoon, Khon Kaen Governor passed the finish line to mark the opening ceremony of Khon Kaen International Marathon 2018. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kittichai Triratanasirichai, Khon Kaen University President and administrators of Khon Kaen Province, Khon Kaen University, public and private organizations witnessed the starting. Khon Kaen International Marathon 2018 has been organized for 15 years with objectives to publicize knowledge and understanding of health science and sports, to promote good and effective health, encourage youths to see the importance of exercise and play sports as a habit. Moreover, the event helps people to become aware of and see the danger of addicted drugs and join in campaign against all types of drugs. Lastly, the event develops Thai athletes towards international standards as well as upgrades the Marathon to World Marathon Majors
Khon Kaen International Marathon is certified under the “AIMS” and “IAAF” standards, which are the organizations certifying international running track standards. The first Marathon in Khon Kaen was in 2004 and continued until today with good and regular improvements in terms of standards for competition management, tracks, management and services. Each year, there are a lot of runners participating. A champion chip is attached to all runners to record running and for finalize the results. Khon Kaen Marathon is divided into 4 categories: the 42.195 km Marathon, the 21.10 Half-Marathon, the 11.55 Mini-Marathon, and the 4.5 km fun-run or jogging. The prizes total 2 million THB: 100,000THB for the male winner of Marathon category and 50,000 THB for the female winner of Marathon. The special prizes this year is 100,000 THB for the runner doing the best in timing and beating the 15 year statistics. The best statistics in 15 years in the 42.195 km Marathon category was done in the 11th Khon Kaen International Marathon on January 26, 2014 by Charles Kimutai Kigen, a runner form Kenya who did 02:17:09 hours.

Male winner of Marathon – Teshome Getachew Besha, an Ethiopian doing 02:20:28 hours, receiving 100,000 THB and a trophy from His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn Bodindradhebayavarangkoon
Female winner of Marathon – Bize Beyira Negasa, Male winner of Marathon –
02:48:06 hours, receiving 50,000 THB and a trophy from His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn Bodindradhebayavarangkoon
Male winner of Half- Marathon – Rotich Kenneth kemboi from Kenya, who did 01:03:49 hours, receiving 50,000 THB and a trophy from Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of King Rama 9.
Female winner of Half- Marathon – Zewditu Ashenafi Workie from Ethiopia, who did 01:14:12 hours, receiving 35,000 THB and a trophy from Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of King Rama 9.
Male winner of Mini-Marathon – Kipchirchir Lel from Kenya, who did 00:34:10 hour, receiving 20,000 THB and a trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Female winner of Mini-Marathon – Birtukan Fetene Shiferaw, an Ethiopian doing 00:41:41 hour, receiving 15,000 THB and a trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
