Khon Kaen held a press conference and welcomed runners across the globe to Khon Kaen International Marathon 2018 on January 28th, with more than 50,000 applicants hitting the historically highest.
On Friday, January 12th 2017, at 13.30 – 15.30, in front of Central Plaza Khon Kaen Hall, Khon Kaen International Marathon Committee held a press conference on “Khon Kaen International Marathon 2018” joined by Mr. Somsak Jungtrakul, Khon Kaen Governor, Mr. Santhi Nilmuenwai, Tourism and Sports Khon Kaen Provincial Officer, Assoc. Prof. Piansak Pakdee, a vice president for Student and Alumnus Affairs, and main sponsors. Other participants include sponsors, press, government officer runners, and other sectors in Khon Kaen.
Khon Kean Governor, Mr. Somsak Jungtrakul, mentioned that Khon Kaen International Marathon is the biggest event that encourages exercising and tourism and that every sector in Khon Kaen collaboratively holds annually. This year sees the 15th and the event will be held on Sunday January 15th, 2018. Khon Kaen is now fully ready to welcome runners from all over the world, with 5 million baht budget to hearten Thai people to stay healthy by running and to stimulate Khon Kaen’s economy.
Assoc. Prof. Piansak Pakdee, a vice president for Student and Alumnus Affairs, said that Khon Kaen University is committed to devoting to the society by sustainably empowering people and developing communities through passing on knowledge, wisdom, and resources to the communities and society. In terms of sports, KKU has been welcoming public to utilize its sports facilities and parks, and applying science and sports technology to Khon Kaen International Marathon for 14 years. In this 15th event, medical and nursing services are provided along the four routes. According to safety and security, 100% of the route streets are closed and all runners are granted with insurance. Khon Kaen International Marathon routes have been standardized by Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the technology has been developed with RFID on which 2 million baht is spent to improve the system for tracking runner’s distance and time. Runners can check their statistic immediately after finishing the run at the 8th check point behind the finishing point. Currently, there are roughly 7,000 applicants for mini marathon, 3,000 for half marathon, 2,000 for full marathon, and 25,000 for fun run. Overall, this year Khon Kaen International Marathon should reach the highest number of applicants in history, with the estimation of 50,000 runners.
“Moreover, KKU has, for more than ten years, encouraged young students to participate in the event by coordinating with schools in the Northeast to establish a running training center in a school and to provide free application and accommodation for interested students to inspire them to run in a standardized event. Currently, more than 5,000 students from 51 schools joined the program.”
Mr. Santhi Nilmuenwai, Tourism and Sports Khon Kaen Provincial Officer remarked that the objectives of Khon Kaen International Marathon are to distribute knowledge, and understanding of health science and sports for health, to encourage the youth to exercise and play sports, to raise awareness of the harm of drugs so that they will be against them, to improve administration system and technology for the event, to push Thai runners to the international level, to achieve being Asean Marathon Majors, and to support tourism in Khon Kaen.
At any rate, Khon Kaen International Marathon has been a learning organization. The working team, staff, and joint ventures have assessed the event in all aspects for better performance next time. It is to empower the Thai runners to become professional runners by leveling up Khon Kaen International Marathon to be ASEAN Marathon Majors and a World Marathon Majors.
“Khon Kaen International Marathon 2018” will be held on Sunday January 28th, 2018 with four types available – Full Marathon 42.195 km, Half Marathon 21.10, Mini Marathon 11.55 km, and Fun Run 4.5 km. The first female and male runners who reach the finishing point will be granted His Majesty the King’s trophy for Full Marathon, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s for Half Marathon, and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s trophy and cash for Mini Marathon.
